how long does it take for zofran to work? I am about 10 weeks pregnant. I have lost about 10 pounds so far because I haven't been able to keep food down. My dr. gave me a RX for Zofran. I just paid about 300.00 for 8 pills so I hope they work. I just took one. How long does it take to take effect? Thanks

practicalwizard replied: "oh, man. i'm guessing your insurance didn't cover that. you know, you can file a pre-authorization with your insurance company. your doc will have to fill out some paperwork to see if they will cover that for you... that's what i did. anyway, it takes about 15 minutes to work and is supposed to last about 8 hours. that's what they also give to chemo patients to combat their nausea. it works with the brain to shut off its signal that you are feeling sick, not with your stomach or anything so, yes, it works. i sometimes feel like they wear off sooner, though, and you can't take another one for 8 hours. anyway, good luck, and i'd definitely look into that with your insurance. and that's generic, i know. my insurance covers 30 pills at a $60 co-pay and i had to have that authorized."

Zofran, how long to work? pregnant? Im 11 weeks preg and have bad nausea, im going to be taking half a pill of zofran a day, how long does it take to work? I only have four pills so 8 days of them is this enough time for it to take effect?

Becca replied: "I love zofran! it worked wonders for me. immediatley worked as soon as i took it. i got a month dosage because i was heading back to germany, but it even stopped the gagging for me. however it didn't stop some ick feelings around certain food or smell."

how long till zofran side effects go away? I have tardive dyskinesea from reglan, the E.R. put me on zofran to stop my nausea but now the anxeity and dyskinesea are worse. How long will these side effects last?

Theresa N replied: "One day or two."

What can we do if our insurance company is taking too long to approve Zofran? My wife needs it very bad for her pregnancy to avoid getting hyperemisis and pick lines again.

Mrseby replied: "sorry to hear that I had the same problem in both of my pregnancies and the Zofran is very expensive what I did was just got half the script filled untill my insurance went through it cost me 200.00 for 6 but it is very well worth the money I wish her luck"

Candy517 replied: "Try B-2 vitamins. And if that doesn't work, have your doctor prescribe phenagren (it's ALOT cheaper)! good luck!"

Deevums replied: "Being a survivor of hyperemesis and pic lines myself, I was not going to put myself through that with my second pregnancy. After lots of research and trying everything out there, phenergan was my miracle pill and was covered by insurance. The only side affect is drowsiness for the first few weeks. I found out about it through. Lots of luck to you!"

Just posted a question but how long does it take for.......? Zofran to kick in??? Please someone tell me I am dying here and I can't even get my prescription tell tomorrow.....And I have to be somewhere early thursday morning....I am so sick I can't drive so I hope its fast :/ Thanks!

Jen replied: "It will probably take about an hour to kick in. You will need to continue taking it or you will just feel sick again. Some women are so sick that the Zofran doesn't work completely. Good luck!"

My morning sickness started at 5 weeks, and got really bad at 6 weeks. I am now on Zofran for it. How long? does morning sickness usually last (through what week)?

Ginger G replied: "Morning sickness can come and go during the whole pregnancy. Mine started at 12weeeks - 18 weeks . Then it started again at 7months. There is just no way to know. sorry......... I know how you feel."

liljess69692004 replied: "it could last throughout the whole pregnancy. there really is no specific time. some women never get it and some women get it early and stop."

Just One Girl's Opinion replied: "That's hard to say as it's different for everyone. Not to scare you but a friend of mine had it bad throughout her entire pregnancy. I'm talking ER trips and IV's. Some are lucky and have none at all. But if I had to guess, I would say it will subside a little in your second trimester. Hope it let's up soon. Good Luck!"

Danielle replied: "i was sick up until 20 weeks! :( Zofran really helped control it, but if i didnt take it, it was horrible!"

jazzynic22 replied: "Generally it lasts through the first trimester. I was cursed with it through thirty weeks! Zofran is great though. My insurance didn't cover it, but I found that Reglan worked for me and was a heck of alot cheaper."

R C replied: "I found by the end of my 1st trimester the morning sickness was gone. ood luck"

onecharliecat replied: "I only had morning sickness 1 day and it was triggered by the smell of bacon cooking (and I normally love the smell of that), so I avoided being anywhere that aroma would be for awhile. Take in to consideration what kind of smells are around you (ones that you take for granted), that could be possibly triggering the sickness. Good luck."

navyprincess1227 replied: "I was sick from 6-26wks with my daughter. It can last the whole pregnancy and it can come and go throughout the pregnancy. There is no magic set time frame for it to go away."

Lynnette T replied: "It's different for all, but mine pretty much started like yours at 5 weeks, then tapered off at 11 weeks! Stay in there, it's tough, but you will get through it! Good Luck!"

mommylady74 replied: "For me morning sickness stayed with me throughout my entire three pregnancies. As a matter of fact my first pregnancy (twins) I threw up in the delivery room and the first baby came out. I had it so severe I was hospitalized mulitple times and was given a variety of drugs that never worked with some serious side effects (my last drug prescribed was given to cancer patients) so i stopped taking any after my first pregnancy for fear of my babies not being healthy. Every bit of pain and discomfort I endured was worth it for my beautiful healthy babies. So all I can say be patient and the final reward will be well worth the wait."

How expensive is Zofran for sickness during pregnancy? I have been prescribed Phenergen for past pregnancies but it really knocked me out and made me super drowsy. I can't do that this time around with 3 young children. I've heard Zofran is expensive - can ladies who have used it give me an idea of the cost and how long the supply lasted you? Thanks.

briannatins replied: "When I started my pregnancy I didn't have insurance, and EACH pill was $10. But with my tri-care standard insurance it went down to like $4 for 3 months.. Big difference. Honestly, it depends on your insurance. Call your pharmacy and ask them.. They can tell you exactly what it'll be with your insurance and dosage and everything."

becca12679 replied: "my insurance only covered 15 pills a month and they were supposed to be taken every 4 hours! I can't remeber the exact amount, but with no insurance coverage, the cost was around $12-13 per pill, so I couldn't continue to take it. But wow, it was such a great medicine! If I could have afforded it, I would have stayed on it. It was the only thing that worked to help me keep food and fluids down during the really severe times in my morning sickness."

Anyone here on Zofran for morning sickness? I am on Zofran and have been for about 2 weeks, i have terrible all day sickness. Well today i thought i was feeling pretty good and my doc said if your feeling good try to not take it. So i didn't take it till about 6 pm, when i started feeling terrible. I still feel ill and its 9 pm now. Has this happened to anyone else? I usually take it first thing in the am and than every 6 hours after that. Is it because i waited to long to take it for it to work? so usually i take 3 doses a day

Rylee's mommy TTC #2 replied: "Yes you waited to long... I was on Zofran for my whole pregnancy yu have to make sure you take it first thing in the AM and then every six hours it will help."

alimay replied: "I ended up being put on that also at the beginning of this pregnancy. I didn't have morning sickness with my first so this was a change! I found the same thing would happen though. I usually took it in the am when I woke up and then every 6 hours to make sure I didn't start getting sick. Then I started trying to go without it, but if I started feeling sick later in the day I would take one and it seemed like it always took a bit longer to work. There were times that it seems like it didn't work at all. I just stuck through it. I finally quit taking them when I was almost 5 months pregnant. Hopefully it all goes well for you, I know its no fun!!"

Starsfan14 replied: "Honestly since you are so early in your pregnancy then I would keep taking it three times a day. And maybe around week 12 then try to take it only twice a day. And then see if you can slowly wean yourself off of it. Some people only have bad morning sickness until week 12 or 13. And for so it last much longer if not the entire pregnancy. I was just put on it at 30 weeks, because my weight gained had stalled for 6 weeks, and I was throwing up every evening several times a night. With my first pregnancy in the last few weeks, my doctor told me she should have put me on it in the very beginning, but always thought I would get better. But I never got better and had to suffer for 9 months. Take it if you need it. You know your body better than your doctor."

How long does discomfort from Hiatus Hernia last? I am 27 yrs old and was diagnosed with hiatus hernia (sliding) after I was taken to the hospital with food poisoning and a little blood (mallory weiss tear). I stayed in the hospital for a couple of days and then was released on Pantodac and Domstal(Domperidone). Felt nausea for a couple of days and then everything went back to normal. Got off the meds. No heartburn, no acidity, appetite came back etc. I was like this before the food poisoning also. Now two weeks down the road I consumed from deep fried stuff and all the symptoms came back. I tried Zantac + Zofran, Anti cramping medication, Pantodac + Zofran. I haven't been able to sleep, get very restless in the night arms and feet get tingly. Eating very light diet and eating every 2 hrs. My doc claims my Hiatus hernia got aggravated when I vomited and then again when I ate fried food. Its been 10 days now and no respite. I don't want to take any medication and want to know how long will it take for my symptoms to subside.

Second-time Mommy replied: "I have the hiatal hernia too. It can make my stomach hurt, but I've never had the other symptoms you describe so it sounds like you have some leftover pain from the food poisoning or something else entirely. When I eat something I that aggravates my stomach, it doesn't last more than a couple of hours and is relieved by antacids. I can't imagine how this is related to the hernia unless it's not a sliding hernia?? Sounds awful. Hope you are better soon."

Does anyone know what kind of medicine my sister could take that wouldnt make her throw up after ACL surgery? On August 4 my sister had surgery to repair her torn ACL. She has always reacted very badly to anesthesia (from past surgeries). We told them this when we got into the doctors office the day of surgery, and they gave her some meds to help her when she woke up. Long story short, they didn't work. She had to stay five extra hours before they would release her. She has been home for awhile now and she is still throwing up the entire time. The doctor said she was probably sick from the pain killers and we have switched pain medications 4 times now. She took Lortab, then Percocet, then Darvocet-n (which was supposedly nausea free...not so much), and now they are taking her completely off of pain medicine to clear her system and we are going to try Tylenol with codeine. We have also been giving her Phenergan for nausea, but she hasn't stopped throwing up long enough for it to get into her system. She hasnt been eating anything but crackers and mashed potatoes either and I dont know what to do anymore! Is there any other medications that she could take that would help her? ACL surgery is extremely painful and the fact that she has been throwing up constantly for almost two weeks now is ridiculous and not helping her healing process. Help please!!! I was told by my neighbor (who is a nurse) that it could be given to her in a shot (but I am not sure how well that would work considering you have to be given pain medications every few hours...kind of invasive), or a medicine called Zofran. Any suggestions would be amazing! We are desperate for anything that will work! Thanks!

Efa_J replied: "Zofran is a very good anti sickness med. It worked for me for a while after undergoing chemotherapy. After a while though it didn't work so well and I switched to something called Nozinan. It is a very strong medication and not recommended for everyone but since I was extremely ill it was prescribed for me. I found it excellent. I went through a whole 5 day session of chemotherapy without getting sick once!"
